Arizona Jewelry Display Shows Off Best of the West

There’s great handmade jewelry in all pockets of this country, but we think the designs coming out of Arizona are especially beautiful and worth introducing to locals and out-of-towners alike. To that end, Krikawa recently unveiled a permanent in-store and online display of Arizona jewelry. It’s the first space of its kind for area metalsmiths to show their work, and we’re thrilled to shine a light on this fine and very difficult craft. When I was in art school, I fantasized about one day owning a gallery that also showed other artwork. Apparently, other jewelers had a similar idea, and for years Tucson enjoyed two jewelry art galleries. (One of them even showed some of my work when I was in college!) Meanwhile, I went on to open Krikawa Jewelry Designs, on North Campbell Avenue. Why on earth would I be writing a story (okay, a rant) about angry jewelry store owners? I certainly am not one. 

Now, I love jewelry.  I love my staff, and I love my customers.  I actually really enjoy what we do here at Krikawa. My husband John Krikawa, the Chief Technical Officer of Krikawa Jewelry Designs, has a brother Andy Krikawa, who is married to Jennifer Krikawa.  Sound complicated?  It's not (we'll leave the other eight Krikawa siblings out of it!).

So, my sister-in-law Jennifer is also the founder, President and Artistic Director of the Vashon Opera Company on Vashon Island, just west of Seattle.  Jennifer and Andy moved from New York to find a quiet place to raise their children, but couldn't get away from singing. More...
